Get ready for your driving lessons.
Starting at 17
3 months before your 17th birthday, you can apply for your provisional license. You can apply for the license at UK Driving License or you can apply through the post office with a D1 form. Plus please be advised you will need to confirm identity.

The driving license will take approximately 3 weeks.
The theory test
You have to pass your theory test before you book your practical test.
- Theory test consists of 50 questions of which you need 43 to pass, and hazard perception of which you need 44 out of 75. (Your driving instructor will help with this).
The practical test
Lasts about 40 minutes, it involves 1 maneuver, an independent drive of about 10 minutes (varies), an eyesight test, show me tell me questions, possible controlled stop, and varying road conditions.
- You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more and you fail). Marking Sheet
- Make one serious or dangerous fault and you'll fail.

Eyesight
The law states you should be able to read a number plate 20.5 meters away. If you are not able to do so then you cannot start to learn to drive. If in any doubt get your eyes tested.
